In principle, the first post is meant to be something of a mission statement. Perhaps you’re expecting some kind of diatribe about who I am and what I’m doing here. After all, virtually anyone can create a blog. So what separates what I have to say from any other blog out there?

It’s a good question. So here’s an answer for you.

I intended this blog to serve as something of a writer’s journal. I write creatively, primarily for my own enjoyment. I like to write in a variety of genres, from Westerns to fantasy to historical adventure to science fiction. My first great love will always be superheroes, but I like breaking into new directions that I haven’t explored. I love tackling the kinds of stories that aren’t normally told. I like stories that stay true to a foundation but find a way to break from the formula.

This is a place for me to focus my thoughts and give me a place to ramble on about the writing process. However, I don’t like to limit my options, so from time to time, I might digress onto other tangents and topics. It may also be that this blog will evolve in a direction that I won’t expect, and everything I tell you now will be wrong. This is my first blog, and the writing process is very much a dynamic thing. We’ll see how it works out.

I set all my works in a shared setting that I call the Blitzverse. I named the universe after Blitz, which is my primary series. Blitz is named for my signature character, a teen superheroine that I invented in early 2005. Eventually, I began building an entire universe around her.

In time, the Blitzverse took on a life of its own during the development process. Blitz is still an important cornerstone of the world I’ve built, but the world exists independently of her. A timeline began to form, stretching back centuries before Blitz’s story even begins. The world has grown beyond just superheroes, and into other forms of storytelling that I’ve wanted to experiment with. With any luck, this will lead to an interesting variety of stories. I may talk about these as I go.

Oh, yeah, and odds are I may want to weigh in on other stories that I run across. Probably comics will be part of that, but it won’t be exclusively that. I may jump into novels, classic literature, TV shows, movies, or anything else I might encounter along the way. My focus right now is on the general craft of writing, why things work (or don’t), and an appreciation of good storytelling.

Right now, the blog is a work in progress. You may see periodic changes as I decide to clean house. I’m still new to the idea of blogging. That means that I’ll probably keep playing with functions and ideas until I’m satisfied with it. Blogging is like any kind of art… it’s part inspiration and part effort. You just never know which predominates until you’re done with it.
