Goodbye, Tim Russert…

This just in. I heard a report today that “Meet The Press” host Tim Russert died today of a heart attack. He was 58.

This is really sad news. As a general rule, I hold journalists in the same class of contempt that I reserve for lawyers and politicians. Tim Russert was the exception, the kind that represented what his field should stand for, and all too often don’t.

Of all the journalists currently working in the business, Russert was one of the damned few I had any respect for. He didn’t get it right every time, and sometimes I disagreed with him. But he strove hard to be fair to people of all political stripes. He had a friendly way of dealing with his guests. He didn’t pursue an agenda beyond getting the truth. He was, in short, everything that a journalist should be.

This is a sad day for the Russert family. But more than that, this is a sad day for journalism. We need more guys like Tim Russert… and now he’s gone. He will be missed.
